For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. (Colossians 1:19-20 NASB)
Evangelism is part of our Great Commission that was given to the church by Jesus Christ. We are commanded to preach the gospel and make disciples. If we do not preach the gospel, we are failing to obey our Lord's command. If we fail to make disciples of new converts, we are failing to obey our Lord's command. We need to be telling people the good news!
If we have been saved by the grace and mercy of God, then we should be telling others of that same grace and mercy that is available to them as well if they repent of their sin and place their faith and trust in the only Savior for mankind.
Reconciliation is ultimately why evangelism matters. Without the reconciliation that Christ affords us through His death on the cross in the body that He offered, there would really be no good news to the gospel message. It is the fact that man can be reconciled to God in this life through the cross of Christ that is the essence of the gospel. This reconciliation that we have back to God through Christ is one of perfect redemption and adoption into the family of God. We will stand justified and perfectly righteous before God because of the price that Christ paid on the cross in our place.
God will reconcile all things back to Himself and every person will either go from open hostility to eternal judgment or they will go from open hostility towards God in sin to eternal life.
Yes, we are rebel sinners.
Yes, we deserve death.
Yes, we deserve eternal separation from God.
Yes, we hate God and are enemies of God in the natural, unregenerated state.
Yes, we are hostile towards God in our mind and disposition.
Yes, we are alienated from God.
Yes, we are under the condemnation of our sin.
Yes, we are spiritually dead in trespasses and sins.
But in Christ, when we repent of our sin, when we place our faith and trust for salvation in the only Savior, then we can say,
Yes, I am saved!
Yes, I am redeemed!
Yes, I am a new creature in Christ!
Yes, I am forgiven!
Yes, I have peace with God!
Yes, I have peace with my Creator!
Yes, I am spiritually alive in Christ!
Yes, I am no longer a slave to sin!
Yes, I am now a slave to righteousness!
Yes, I am reconciled to Christ!
Praise God for the reconciliation we have in Christ Jesus!
Evangelism matters! We need to tell the world about the reconciliation to God that can only be found in Christ!
