Let them praise the name of the Lord, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven. (Psalm 148:13 NASB)
We have arrived at the final entry in the 5 Solas Category. This time we tackle Soli Deo Gloria which is translated - Glory To God Alone.
No matter what we may achieve in this Christian life we must never lose sight of the fact that there is no glory reserved for ourselves, but all glory is not due but should be willfully given to God, the sole Creator and Sovereign of the Universe. Without God there would be no universe, without God there would be no you and me, and without God there would be no life outside of Himself; so all glory is rightfully His.
The verse in Psalms states that the Lord's name ALONE is exalted. His glory is above earth and heaven. There is no one like the Lord. There is no God but the Lord! His name and His name alone should be exalted above all things!
In particular reference to our salvation Soli Deo Gloria means that all glory for our salvation is due to God alone. Not only this but as we have covered in the other solas and will cover off and on again in the future our salvation is completely dependent upon God. Without God and His grace, no flesh would be saved. It is not on man's efforts or based on man's choice that he is saved because due to the totality of his depravity man is utterly incapable of choosing God.
Paul was another Bible writer who not only knew this truth, but repeated it often. Take for example the ending verses of the book of Philippians when he states: "Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen." (Phil. 4:20 NASB) This is not the only place where Paul uses this wording or something very similar. Paul knew and recognized that all glory is due to God and God alone, both for our very existence and also for our salvation.
From a practical perspective this particular sola should have an immense impact on our daily lives. Our life should be lived as a daily quest to bring the most glory to our God and Savior.
We should live for the glory of God, we should work for the glory of God. We should share testimony of our faith to the glory of God, we should pursue truth for the glory of God. In each and every thing that we do the glory of God should be at the forefront of our thinking.
We must not let pride enter the equation. We can't allow self to overshadow the glory of God in our lives. When our glory becomes more important to us than God's glory we are in gross error and need to repent and get back to praising the name of the Lord Almighty! Glory be to God, and God alone!
